OVERALL VIEW ON PROJECT

At the beginning of this semester Professor Belk asked us to set up a word press site for our class project that we were doing for the semester. I had no idea what a word press site was. But not only were we required to make a word press but we were also required to link it up to some kind of social media website to create site traffic for our class project site.  I was quick to make my WordPress account and browse through it. But I wasn’t too sure of what social media website I would use.  Since I myself am an active social media user.  I have a Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Yahoo and G-mail account. I have a very good amount of people on all of those so I wasn’t sure which one would be the perfect choice for this project.

Facebook ended up being my final choice for the social media. I figured Facebook would be perfect for this class project because it’s so easy to use and more people are familiar with it. I also have a good amount of Facebook friends. I set up page for the class project on my Facebook page. I named it “Comp II Class Project” . I shared the link to my WordPress a few times.

What could I have done differently to improve my results during the semester? Honestly I could’ve done so much more. First of all I would have connected the Google analytics page to my WordPress blog. That was one of the things that I failed to do .I didn’t do it because I found it pretty difficult to do at first. And after a while I just never went back to connect them. I could’ve asked for help or just watched the video that Professor Belk included in one of pages of instructions at the beginning of the semester. Another thing that I failed to do which was one of the main things that I was supposed to do for this project was put the class page link on my word press page. It would’ve definitely caused more cite traffic. I thought that putting the link on the Facebook page would be enough but it wasn’t. In a way I failed at understanding exactly what Professor Belk was asking from us. Posting the articles necessary was good. But if I would’ve posted more articles I would’ve probably lured more followers in. Kids my age on Facebook aren’t going to be too interested in going into a blog with boring stuff about social networking and career fields. If I would’ve posted more of my won articles on interesting stuff the few visitors on my page would’ve probably stayed on longer and would’ve shared the link to my WordPress to their friends on their social networks or etc. The last thing that I know could’ve helped my cite traffic even more was if I kept up with the Facebook page that I made for it. I published the link on my Facebook only a few times in the beginning of the semester. That’s where my few views came from. If I would have kept up with it and advertised it more I would

Overall I’d like to think that the WordPress project was a success. I could’ve done things a little bit differently for it to have been precise. But I think the effort that I put into it was good enough to understand the concept of the project. Connecting my WordPress to my Facebook account I believe in my opinion was the best choice. Facebook is a very simple cites that many are familiar with. I made it pretty easy for my friends and family to link up to my WordPress. The work that I did on my WordPress blog was pretty good as well. I fixed it up to a nice viewable luring to the viewers and I posted everything that was required for the class.

My plans for my WordPress blog were to delete it immediately after I was done with the class. But I’ve come to realization that maybe later on in the near future having a WordPress site will come into some kind of use. So as of now I’m going to let it sit and eventually I know that I’ll come back to it. As a college student I know that I will need some kind of blog like WordPress for another class. If not it won’t hurt to put some more of my paper on there to see if they get any kind of view. Interesting papers like my criminal justice papers.

PBS Newshour

PBS Newshour which stands for “Public Broadcasting Service” has been one of the most viewed and trusted news program viewed by millions of Americans for the past 35 years. It is produced by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions. Not only is PBS broadcasting on television, but as well as online. PBS news hour provides Americans with in depth analysis that matter to the people most.

PBS Newshour has many different authors to all their different articles.  Who are these people? Are they trust worthy? Kwame Holman is a journalist for the PBS Newshour. He joined PBS back in 1983 as a producer and correspondent. He has published thousands of articles for the Newshour since he joined. Some of them which have won national journalism awards. All of the authors to the sources in PBS Newshour are identifiable. They are all big time journalist with lots of experience who have some kind of back ground on reporting and the issue that they write their articles on.

The PBS Newshour is associated with different organizations. One of the main ones that they are associated with is twitter. There are quite a variety of articles talking about twitter. For example one of the most recent ones which were posted March 21, 2013 was “Happy Birthday Twitter” by Meena Ganesan. This article was mostly talking about twitters 7th birthday and how far and successful it’s come along these past few years. PBS is publishing this information because it comes to their convenience to have articles about twitter. They are helping twitter become more and more known in a positive way. And by them publishing information and articles on twitter, twitter is returning the favor and tweeting about them in their tweeter news.

Does PBS Newshour distinguish between opinions and independent facts on their articles? Yes, PBS Newshour distinguishes between opinions and independent facts on their articles. For example the article “Faith and Morality Play Major Roles in Debate on Gay Marriage” is a perfect example of this and shows how they do distinguish between opinions and independent facts. Different of the journalist discuss what their opinions are on gay marriage, whether they agree with it or not. They also involve solid facts about gay marriage.

PBS Newshour does use independent sources to back up their claims. At the end of almost every article of theirs there is a list with different cites that you can go onto. These sites are always about the topic that the article was discussing and other cites with more information about the topic. The information used on PBS is backed up with sources and opinions of experts.

PBS Newshour is one of the few good sources that don’t let us Americans down. They have trustworthy and well known authors for their articles, very well-known organizations that they work with to help benefit each other, distinguishes between facts and opinions, is not bias on issues, backs up their articles with other sources of information is legit on their information and is updated recently.

Sean Fagan (CSI)

The criminal justice system is a very popular field with many careers to choose from. From being a police officer, park ranger, detective to an FBI agent.  As a college student here at UWF my major is Criminal Justice and I plan to get into law enforcement and become a police officer as well as a crime scene investigator after I complete my studies here at UWF. A crime scene investigator also known as a CSI is one of the most popular careers in the criminal justice system. Not only is it one of the most popular but it’s one of the most useful. CSI’s are responsible for evaluating all the evidence at the crime scene. A police officers job is to enforce the law in the community. People depend on police officers to protect not only their lives. But also to protect their property. Police officers do these duties in many different ways always depending on the size of their organization.

Sean Fagan is the crime scene investigator from UWF’s own police department. Sean who is 47 years of age has been in the criminal justice field for about 25 years now. I chose to interview him because he has plenty of knowledge about working in the system. Sean who is originally from Milton, Florida is UWF’s crime scene investigator. Sean began his career in the criminal justice system as a local police officer in the Milton area. Patrolling the streets of his town.  He said the he enjoyed his time giving back to his community by helping stop crime and provide order for his town’s safety. Sean has been a CSI for about 3 years now here on campus. Sean job at the police station a crime scene investigator on campus requires for him to follow up on all the crimes on campus. No crime no matter how small it is can be left unsolved or ignored. He wants the students at UWF to feel like the police department on campus does its job by making it a safe environment. He also wants them to feel like they have a trust worthy team who they can go to if they’re ever in any kind of danger or need any kind of help. Resolving the crime and coming to conclusion is Sean’s favorite part of his job. He says that there’s nothing then a better feeling than knowing that you “accomplished “your task whether it’d be for the week or etc.

Sean Fagan was the perfect person to interview for my paper for three big reasons. He is in the criminal justice field, has took on jobs in both careers that I want to pursue and has amazing knowledge and time in the field of study. Interviewing Sean made me admire his courage. Not anyone can take on such a difficult job like that. The school, students and his team depend on him. To make the right choices and give the right orders to make this a safe environment.

Social Networking

Social networking has come a long way in the last few decades. It has enhanced the world’s capability to function and communicate in the easiest way possible. But have we ever sat there and asked ourselves how do social networks affect our teenagers negatively? As much as social networks help us communicate they have major negative effects on our teenagers in our society today. It slows down their social development skills, affects their health, plays a huge influence in teens act upon drinking and doing drugs and it makes it harder for them to figure out who they really are.

Adolescence is the essential time for social development in a person’s life. During these years teens learn how to maintain intimate relationships and other social skills. Studies have shown that teenagers spend an average of 15 hours 33 minutes on Facebook per month (2009, Statistic Brain). These fifteen hours and 33 minutes could be spent interacting in person instead. Face to face communication is lessened more and more as teens rely on social networking to communicate with their peers. . USC Annenberg School study found that the percentage of people reporting less face-to-face time with family in their homes rose from 8% in 2000 to 34% in 2011.

According to a study done by the American Public Health Association (APHA) teens that excessively spend a lot of time on social networks have a higher risk of developing health problems. Depression and anxiety are two of the most common. They spend so much time alone that they fall into these stages. They also develop poor sleeping habit which can cause them to do poorly in school.

Social networks allow you to be anyone that you want, even if that person really isn’t you. You can portray any kind of image of yourself that you want everyone to see. This makes it hard for teens to figure out who they really are. They are too busy trying to make themselves look like someone else which in most cases is their image of a “ perfect “ teen to feel superior and better than others.

Another negative aspect of social networking is the influence that it has on our teens to do drugs and alcohol. According to a survey conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University teens that use social networks have a higher chance of doing drugs and alcohol. According to ( CASA, 2013) thirty-five percent of teens who see pictures of their peers online drinking will eventually end up doing it.

Social networking has really impacted our society. The teens in today’s society are really shaped by social networks. They breathe, eat, sleep social networks. Social networks slows down their social development skills, affects their health, makes it harder for them to figure out who they are, and plays a huge influence in their act upon drinking and doing drugs. So ask yourself what can we do as a society to prevent this from happening?
